What technological advances will define 2026? Khurram Masood, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of smalt, shares his thoughts on the year ahead.
In 2026, the defining technological shift will be the emergence of an execution layer for the economy. AI will move from co-pilots that work with words to operators that make things happen in the real world, taking on coordination work that burns time: quoting, scheduling, documentation, follow-ups, and handoffs across too many tools.
This will show up in the real economy, especially housing, energy retrofits, and skilled trades, where Europe faces labor shortages. Many businesses still run on phone calls and WhatsApp threads. AI will start turning those everyday inputs into real outcomes, with voice calls captured, tasks created, and digital work products completed.
The winners will not be the fanciest models. They will be teams that integrate AI into everyday workflows where data is already created, so results are dependable. Unstructured inputs like messages, photos, and site notes become offers, work plans, checklists, and audit-ready documentation.
2026 will not (yet!) be the year AI replaces work. It will be the year it removes friction, giving skilled people more time for customer relationships and craftsmanship.
