Egon Zehnder, the world's leading executive search and leadership advisory firm, unveiled the results of its latest Global CEO Survey at Berlin Global Dialogue today. The survey reflects the evolving responsibilities of business leaders in a rapidly changing world.
The survey gathered insights from over 470 CEOs worldwide, revealing their perspectives on the significant transformations anticipated in the next decade. 85% of CEOs foresee profound shifts in both business and politics. 80% of CEOs express their commitment to a role that extends beyond traditional corporate leadership, reflecting a growing awareness among executives of their influence on broader issues affecting countries and communities.
When asked to identify the most pressing issues they feel responsible for addressing, CEOs highlighted climate change as the paramount concern, with 32% ranking it as their top priority. Following closely were the regulation of artificial intelligence (30%) and the promotion of a fairer global economy (13%). This focus indicates a collective desire among leaders to engage with and impact critical global challenges.
With respect to the political shifts ahead, the rise of populism and nationalism are cited as the biggest concern, followed by the formation of new geopolitical blocs. In fact, 68% consider geopolitics an intrinsic part of doing business. Lars-Hendrik Röller, Founder and Chair of Berlin Global Dialogue, emphasized the importance of these findings: “Political shifts, including the concerning rise of right-winged movements, are increasingly relevant to CEOs. Promoting dialogue between leaders from business and politics is hence more crucial than ever.”
In light of these anticipated challenges, the survey also asked CEOs to identify the most crucial adaptive skills for future success. The overwhelming consensus pointed to the need for "cultivating a culture of openness and curiosity," with 99% of respondents highlighting its importance. Closely following this was the ability to "hone the ability to listen," cited by 97% of CEOs.
Michael Ensser, Chair of Egon Zehnder, noted, "CEOs are embracing a new era of leadership. They are positioning themselves as key architects of societal progress. As complexity increases, they recognize that fostering curiosity and openness within their organizations will be critical to meeting the challenges ahead."
